In this blog post, I’ll show you how to change small habits by giving an example of one that’s been “haunting” me for years. For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a habit of procrastinating when it came time to clean up my desk or do anything else that required sitting still. Instead, I would stare at the large pile of papers on my desk, shake my head, and put it off until another day.

Every time I would have to clean up my desk, the process would take hours. It was frustrating because I had all these great ideas and things in mind that needed doing– but just couldn’t seem to get them done because of this one obstacle. As a result, some projects got put off until “later” or were never completed at all. This was a constant source of frustration for me.

The reason I didn’t prioritize the desk was because it seemed so daunting to clean up. It took hours, and my motivation would fade quickly. This is why small habits are so important– you can make little changes that add up over time.

To fix this problem, I needed a new habit: I needed to spend a few minutes every night cleaning my desk and organizing papers. So I set up an opportunity for myself by clearing out the clutter on my work surface before bedtime, then leaving things as they were when I woke up in the morning.

This simple habit has made all of the difference! Now instead of feeling overwhelmed, I had a process. I could see the end result of a clean desk and focus on that instead.

The next time you’re faced with a huge goal, break it down into smaller, more manageable tasks and create a simple process that will give you the results you need.
